Children’s Dentistry Q & A

What is children’s dentistry?

Children’s dentistry is focused on helping your child maintain their oral health as they age. In addition to routine dental cleanings and exams, Dr. Gazu and her team at Marvel Dental can help prevent tooth decay and gum disease so your child can keep a healthy smile.

The providers at Marvel Dental strive to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere, where your child can feel the most comfortable during their dental treatment. Every provider is committed to making sure your child receives the best care.

What does children’s dentistry involve?

Children’s dentistry involves general dentistry treatments like professional cleanings and oral exams, as well as an array of other procedures that your child’s dentist may recommend.

At Marvel Dental, Dr. Gazu and her team also provide:

Sealants

Teeth have tiny grooves and pits that trap food particles. Over time, the food particles create bacteria and acid that eat away at your teeth, causing cavities. Sealants create a smooth surface on the tops of your child’s teeth, which keep foods from getting trapped in the pits.

Dr. Gazu recommends sealants for children between the ages of six and 12, just when the permanent molars grow in.

Fluoride treatment

Fluoride treatment is an important part of preventive dentistry. Marvel Dental may recommend fluoride treatment after your child’s dental cleaning and exam to prevent tooth decay. Dr. Gazu paints the fluoride gel on top of their enamel to act as a barrier against plaque — sticky film of bacteria that adheres to teeth and causes gum infection and tooth decay.

Tooth extractions

In some cases, your child may need a tooth extraction if they have cavities or other oral health issues. Dr. Gazu may also recommend an extraction to help with overcrowding in certain areas of your child’s mouth.

Fillings

Fillings are common procedures that pediatric dentists perform. They are dental restorations used to repair decaying tooth enamel. The filling material can be made from metal or tooth-colored materials like composite resin.

Orthodontic care

If your child has crooked, crowded, or overlapping teeth, Dr. Gazu may recommend orthodontic treatments like traditional braces or Invisalign®. Invisalign uses plastic, clear aligners to shift your child’s teeth into better alignment, while braces rely on brackets, wires, and elastics (rubber bands).

How can my child maintain their oral health at home?

While your child’s routine office visits are important, it’s also essential that your child takes care of their teeth at home with good oral hygiene habits.

Dr. Gazu recommends brushing and flossing with your child to get them into the habit of normal oral hygiene routines.
