Tooth Extraction Q & A
When would I need a tooth extraction?
A tooth extraction, or permanent removal of your teeth, may be necessary if you have decay or damage. An extraction may also be recommended as a preventive treatment. If your child has a tooth that can lead to overcrowding, your dentist may extract the tooth to prevent the need for orthodontic treatment later on.
You may also need to remove some teeth prior to orthodontic treatments like braces or Invisalign® so the remaining teeth can straighten as planned.
If Dr. Gazu believes that extractions are the best option, she’ll explain to you the process and what to expect with your recovery.
Dr. Gazu may recommend a tooth extraction if you have any of the following issues:
- Severe abscess
- Deep decay
- Tooth fracture or trauma
Tooth extractions are often necessary for wisdom teeth to ensure you have enough space in your mouth for the rest of your teeth and to prevent an abnormal bite.
What types of tooth extractions do you offer?
At Marvel Dental, Dr. Gazu offers two types of extractions. Depending on your X-rays, she can recommend the best approach.
Simple extraction
For a simple extraction, Dr. Gazu uses a dental tool called an elevator to gently loosen the tooth. Then, she uses forceps to rock the tooth back and forth until it can be removed successfully.
Surgical extraction
If you need a surgical extraction, you may have impacted teeth (growing at an abnormal angle) or teeth that don’t have structural integrity.
During the procedure, Dr. Gazu makes an incision in your gum tissue to access the tooth. In some cases, she may break the tooth into smaller pieces to make the extraction process easier. She then sutures the wound close and places a gauze to stop the bleeding.
Which treatments will I need after a tooth extraction?
You may need other dental treatments following your tooth extraction. To prevent teeth from shifting and help you maintain a normal bite, Dr. Gazu may recommend getting a dental implant with crowns or bridges to fill the gap. You may also benefit from implant-retained dentures for a permanent solution to missing teeth. These procedures are typically recommended for patients who have had multiple teeth extracted.
Tooth extractions can improve your oral health if you have tooth damage, decay, or impaction. Call Marvel Dental for an appointment or use the online booking feature today.
