Wisdom Teeth Q & A

What are wisdom teeth?

Wisdom teeth are the third molars that emerge between the ages of 17 and 25. They come in later in life than the rest of your permanent teeth because your jaws don’t have enough room to support them during childhood years.

You have four wisdom teeth: two in your upper jaw and two in your lower jaw. Many adults don’t have room for wisdom teeth once their jaws fully mature.

What are impacted wisdom teeth?

Impacted wisdom teeth occur when your third molars become partially or fully trapped beneath your gums. Oftentimes, impaction can lead to pain and swelling in the surrounding areas. If impaction is left untreated, it can cause infection and more serious oral health problems.

What are some signs I need wisdom teeth removal?

You may have fully emerged wisdom teeth and no symptoms. However, some signs you may need wisdom tooth removal include:

Tender, swollen, and red gums Tooth pain Jaw pain Pain when opening and closing your mouth Earaches Halitosis (bad breath)

You may not know you have impacted wisdom teeth until Dr. Guzu performs X-rays during your routine dental cleaning and exam. She can explain why you need wisdom teeth removal while showing your X-rays.

Symptoms of impaction tend to worsen over time. Early intervention can help protect your teeth and alleviate your pain.

What can I expect from wisdom teeth extraction?

Removing your impacted wisdom teeth can prevent infection and treat uncomfortable symptoms. Dr. Gazu performs surgical extraction using anesthesia to keep you comfortable throughout the procedure. Once she numbs your mouth, she makes an incision in your gums to access your wisdom tooth. Then, she uses special tools to remove the tooth. If necessary, she may remove your tooth in pieces if they’re fractured.

She cleans the surgical site to protect you against infection before suturing the incision close and packing your mouth with gauze. Dr. Gazu sends you home with specific instructions on caring for your mouth while it heals.
